Replacing holding tank pump out hose

I have 2005 Selene #4821. I have an intermittent sewage smell. I have reviewed previous threads regarding sewage odors but have not found the answer to my question. I have replaced all of the plumbing going from the toilets to the holding tank and from the holding tank to the overboard thru hull. My challenge is to replace the plumbing from the holding tank to the deck pump out on the Portuguese Bridge. I have traced the plumbing from the holding tank thru the starboard master cabin hanging locker. I have opened paneling in the closet to find the plumbing going into a space inaccessible by me. I estimate that the deck pump out fitting is approximately 3 feet away from anything that I can access. Also running along with the waste pipe are two ½ inch vent lines. I am reluctant to remove the pump out deck fitting as it appears to have bedding material under it. I have experience taking things apart that are difficult to put back together. I don’t want to create a new problem. So, my question is, does anyone have experience or suggestions regarding replacing the holding tank pump out plumbing line? A second question is replacing the holding tank vent lines. They appear to go to 2 vents that are on the inside starboard bulwark, close to the deck pump out fitting. These fittings are not easily visible from inside the boat. Can the vent fittings be removed from the outside, to access the tubing? Some additional information that might be helpful to others experiencing sewage odors. Upon opening the paneling in the starboard hanging locker, I found a holding tank vent filter that looked quite old. This is not an easy place to find a filter unless you already know it is there. A holding tank vent filter was also mounted on top of the holding tank that was serviced regularly. I removed the old vent filter and relocated the one on top of the holding tank to the space in the hanging locker. Upon reattaching the vent tube to the metal fitting coming from the holding tank it was noticed the metal fitting was completely plugged with debris, not allowing the tank to ventilate. This was likely caused by an overfill of the holding tank. I was able to unplug the fitting with a screw driver. I will find a flexible metal brush to clean the fitting, as I prefer not to remove it from the holding tank, if possible.  I am suspicious now that this plugged ventilation fitting has been the source of the odor problem all along. However, the plumbing was old and needed replacing, according to my pre-purchase survey.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions or help.

Joseph,

Did that job last year replacing both the vent and pump out hose. Had to disassemble the hanging locker’s ceiling and kneel in the hanging locker and worm my arm up following the hoses. Definitely a case of boat yoga but doable. I only had 1 vent and was able to do everything from underneath.

You may want to consider removing the vent filter when you replace the vent line so you can flush the vent line whenever pumping out. I then blow the vent line out to remove any residual water from low spots.(Leaf blower, from the Portuguese Bridge vent while the pump out fitting is still open)

Good luck!

Joseph - I suspect you may be getting the smell from the vent line filters or the filter connections.  I found that the vent filters create more issues than they solve and did what Steve did.  If you ever get into high seas or overfill the blackwater tank those filters are for sure full of smelly stuff and they leak. You prob also have BW sitting at a low point in the vent hose.  I’ve both overfilled my tank and rolled the boat over pretty far in big seas so that BW gets into the vent.  I fixed the problem by replacing the filter with a length of hose with female fittings.

Once you do that (or replace the vent line completely) then wash the bilge out from the closet access to get residual dried blackwater out of there.
