I admit, this may rank up there with the best anchor and single vs twin engines, but I'm at a point where I need to decide which bottom paint to apply.
I've had the bottom paint and barrier coat removed and some bottom defects and blisters repaired. I have always used Interlux Micron CSC, a relatively soft ablative paint with good results. It would last 1.5 to 2 years in a combination of cold and warm saltwater. The advantage is that it didn't build up too quickly. Much of it would sluff off during use, and then a light sanding before the next coat.
I'm in Guatemala and they frequently apply a hard, 100% copper paint....at a cost. It lasts 7 years or so. That's one end of the spectrum. Then there are a number of hard 60% Cu hard to semi-ablative paints to choose from.
I cruise about 5,000 nm/year, but have 1-2 months of non-movement in marinas twice a year. I'm in the Caribbean now, but will be headed up the West Coast into colder water (55-70F). Also, I need a paint that allows the boat to be hauled without repainting.
What's been working for you, and what would you recommend?
