URGENT-Hot Water Tank

My Immersion hot water tank element has burned out, currently in AYB Norfolk. Any suggestions would be a great help.

Greg,
Best to go on their website to see how to get a new one.  Or at least call them up and get advice.  I would think that a residential heater element would work, but best to ask them.

Only sites I am seeing are in the UK hence the frustration, Was hoping someone else could direct me to a USA Supplier that they have dealt with in the past

From the photo you posted, it appears that there's a thermal limit incorporated, have you confirmed that the element is actually open and the limit has not tripped? Some of these devices utilize a resettable limit, sometimes a fusible link, or both. I'd want to pull the cover and investigate. Some basic research indicates that these are euro parts and may not be readily available domestically. A thermostat or fusible link might be possible to work around, but the element probably requires an OEM replacement. The manufacturer may be able to provide information on a US parts source.
A pic of what's under the cover may help some.

From the information I could find, it appears that the element is not a typical domestic COTS element. Nothing familiar to me (30 yrs in the Plbg/HVAC business). I 2nd the recommendation to contact the manufacturer for help. Perhaps they have a US supplier.

When you say your "immersion hot water tank", I assume you are referring to a domestic hot water heater. Correct? I'm a bit surprised because most of the Selenes I've seen have Torrid water heaters that are made just a few miles from my home in Washington State.

Is there any other manufacturer/model information for the water heater itself?

No manufacturer info on the tank from what I can see. I have attached a couple of more pic's so you have a better understanding of what I am dealing with as it is not your everyday heating element, check out that nut size

Wow.....yes.....that is different. Are you guys the original owners? I wonder if JTM has any record of the water heater that was installed in that boat. It looks vaguely similar to the Torrid heaters they usually use, but enough different that I'm pretty sure it's not one of theirs.....

So, did I understand your note back to Steve to suggest that you did find a reset and it's not tripped, but the element is still open (i.e. not heating). You can always use an ohmmeter across the element to see if it's open (obviously with power turned off and at least one side disconnected completely).

We are not the original owners, we are the 3rd, I believe I know what I need. I found a boat manufacturer in the USA that uses these but not owning their boat they refused to sell me one lol. 

Yes I used an ohmmeter and the circuit is open.

Did the boat manufacturer tell you who made the water heater? 

Keep us posted on what you find. You *may* be the only Selene out there with this water heater, but that's not terribly likely.

At some point, when you have more time and want a sad story, I'll tell the story of replacing my water heater. I probably posted some about in on the forum when I did it. It was a very painful experience!

I’m hoping I don’t have to replace it. The good news is, if you look at the photo, it has two elements — one 220/230 V and the other 120 V, which runs off my inverter, so I still have hot water. The Admiral is away, so I need to deal with this or at least find a solution before she returns.

Those photos definitely look like UK style immersion heaters. 
The large nut is typical and the body usually holds the replaceable thermostat as well as the element so there is only one cable to connect  - though you can always have a separate thermostat just as you have. 
I have never seen a 120v immersion heater, they are all 240v 
Here is a link to a big box store. They probably won’t ship to the US but you can see what’s available 


I have no idea why the element is titanium. Inconel alloy is the standard and I don’t see why it wouldn’t be enough for fresh water heating - these things can last 20 years with no maintenance. 
 I’d go for an unvented model heater as you have a pressure releaf valve and the system is always under pump pressure rather than gravity fed as many are in the older uk houses

I believe that you may have a Solaris hot water heater. I have one on Peregrine that was sourced from Marine Tec USA located in Anacortes, Washington 360.588.1800. I replaced the 120VAC element and was able to order it from Marine Tec. As you noted, it takes a large socket to remove the element. More recently, the thermostat on the 240vac element had contacts that burned out. It was an easy replacement without removing the entire element.

I’ve got everything sorted out, the hot water tank and diesel heater are all in one system. I was able to get in touch with Marine Tec in the PNW through another Selene owner who saw my post. I’m now just waiting for the part to arrive.

Glad you got it sorted Greg.


Good news here also - We are in VCU Hospital in Richmond where Terry is recovering from bilateral knee replacement surgery early Thursday morning. Complex surgery and only second time in 2025 it was done at this busy teaching hospital. She got on her feet yesterday and walked three times today with a walker, impressing all the MD’s, RN’s, PT’s, OT’s and Aides. Tough Lady! Thank God for narcotics! But I am getting cranky - three nights on a couch in her room for one who deserves “Prince and the Pea” treatment is about all I can stand. I need my king size bed and the river sounds outside my window, not I-95 traffic!
