MINI-RENDEZVOUS JULY 10-14,2025, REGISTRATION, SCH...
Jack Burgess

The Summer Fun Mini-Rendezvous at Horseshoe Bend on the Saint Mary’s River in Maryland and White Point Creek Marina on the Yeocomico River in Virginia, July 10-14, is only three weeks away! The schedule of events, registration, cost and payment information, and our contribution to The Chesapeake Orchestra are discussed below.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

Thursday, July 10 - We suggest arriving on this date to enjoy the anchorage at Horseshoe Bend, the campus of Saint Mary’s College of Maryland (who will be hosting us at their dinghy docks and on the Green), and Historic Saint Mary’s City (which has a great museum, a new exhibit at the chapel, and the Maryland Dove, a re-creation of the Dove, an early 17th century English trading ship, that explored Maryland). All are within easy walking distance from the dinghy docks which are 100 yards or less from our anchorage. Dinner on board your vessel or at SMCM’s great cafeteria.

Friday, July 11 - Anyone not arriving Thursday should plan to anchor by mid-afternoon. The Green opens at 5:00 and we will use SMCM’s dinghy docks and walk up the hill to the Green for picnics and socializing. Vendors will be selling food and drinks and we should bring blankets, low lawn chairs, picnics, and beverages of choice (alcohol OK). Bathrooms are provided and the College is a great host as is the Orchestra. The performance by the Chesapeake Orchestra begins at 7:00, has an intermission, and will end around 9:00. Director Jeff Silberschlag will give our group a shout out and point out to the crowd our armada in the anchorage. SMCM plans to have photographers present, as does the Orchestra, to record our visit. After the concert back to our boats in the anchorage for the night.

Saturday, July 12 - We travel as a group around 9:30-10:00 a.m.from our anchorage across the Potomac River to the Yeocomico River and White Point Creek Marina and protected anchorage at Shannon Branch. It is 14 NM so we should arrive around noon. Afternoon spent socializing, lounging by and swimming in the pool, walks on country lanes, bike rides on loaner bikes, whatever we want.

Dinner plans - When we are ready, grills, picnic tables with umbrellas, and trash containers are there for us. Please bring the protein of your choice for grilling, and a salad, side or vegetable, and dessert for sharing based on the alphabetical boat name list below:

A-K - Salad

L-P - Side or vegetable

Q-Z - Dessert

All are requested to bring serving utensils for their shared food, their own plates and cutlery, beverage of choice and plastic or paper beverage containers. We will be on the pool deck so glassware is discouraged. After dinner activities to be determined.

Sunday and Monday, July 13-14 - Nothing is planned. We have grills, tables, umbrellas, the pool, country lanes to walk or bike on, and plenty of chairs to relax in. Enjoy yourself. Dinner on board or at the grills again, as you please.

COST AND PAYMENT

Nightly slip rates are $2 per foot LOA (not Selene’s LOD measurement) and electricity and water are includes to the extent available. The marina has never had a gathering of this many boats, but has a backup generator if needed. All boats should have working generators if needed.

I am requesting that all vessels make a voluntary contribution of $25-$50 (or more) to support the Chesapeake Orchestra and SMCM’s River Concert Series and to show our appreciation for their hospitality. We will as a group be recognized, maybe in the program and definitely by Director Jeff Silberschlag with a shout out during the performance, which will be heavily attended. He will point out our fleet in the anchorage for all to admire.

PAYMENT - Please send your checks for the nights you expect you will stay at the marina and your contribution to the Chesapeake Orchestra payable to Jack Burgess at the below address. The marina does not accept credit cards and I would like to make one check payable to the owner and a second check payable to the Chesapeake Orchestra showing our support. Please include a note with your contact information and boat name, indicating the amount for slip rental and the amount for contribution. One check is fine. If you can’t attend at the last minute the amount for the slip rental will be refunded. My information is:

All -

Couple of additional details -

SMCM and the Chesapeake Orchestra do not permit dogs, even on leashes, on concert grounds.

SMCM and Horseshoe Bend are approximately 12 miles from Point Lookout, MD. Very nice cruise.

We are hoping for a tent from a generous benefactor for sun/weather protection. Stay tuned.

I am sure there will be more. I will advise of any updates on this thread.

Best - Jack

Hi Jack,

Thank you for below, appreciate all of the organization. As previous we plan to arrive on Thursday, July 10th. We are overnighting in Solomons on July 9th, so hopefully in the anchorage early afternoon.

We’ll get the check in the mail this week as below.

Hoping to hear from all who might attend the MINI-RENDEZVOUS soon so that we can determine the size of tent/canopy we will need at the marina. The tent/canopy and lights are needed to guarantee a successful event, rain or shine. Also, would folks prefer that we all bring our own drinks or that we line up water, sodas, juice and beer in coolers for all to share at the pool and deck area? Let us know your thoughts. All of the above may involve some modest shared expenses to be collected at the marina when we see who is there and if any other source of funding is available.

We look forward to hearing from all who might join us for some fun.

Jack,
I'd suggest we bring our own drinks and water.  It will make it a bit simpler, and everyone gets what they like.

Count on Kelly and I.  Will send you a check by Fri.

We do plan to attend. Two people. Don’t mind sharing cost of a tent for the pool. I like the idea of seeing if the nearby brewery would bring something down that you and someone else previously mentioned

Hi Jack,

Joe & Corrin Crowley will be at the event, and are good with BYOB.

Do you have a Venmo that we could use to send payment?

Corrin

Hi Jack,

Our preference is BYOB. Given the summer we are experiencing so far, we are happy to share in the costs for a tent as needed.

It sounds like we have enough of a consensus.  BYOB keeps it simple.  If we need to make a beverage/beer run I can fire up my Alfa and ride down the road to Jack Rabbit Express (yes, that is the name of the closest store).

Regarding payment, I would prefer mail, a check, a note with your personal info, and description of what the funds are for (slip fees and charitable contribution to Chesapeake Orchestra described).  That gives me a paper record of all accounts and keeps it simple.  Then I can just write three checks to marina, Chesapeake Orchestra and the vendor providing our tent.  The amount for the tent and lighting rental is yet to be determined, but should be modest or covered in another way (waiting for info on that).  Any shared expenses can be handled Saturday or Sunday.

Thanks - Jack

Russ from Naut Lost texted me with a great question, making it apparent i was not detailed enough in the information provided regarding dogs. Dogs are permitted almost everywhere, except on the Chesapeake Orchestra performance grounds from 5:00 p.m. Friday until the venue closes that night. The SMCM campus, trails and lanes are OK for dog walks and there are beaches and a nice point where dogs can take a swim. Likewise, dogs are welcome at the Marina Saturday through Tuesday, or until folks are ready to depart.

Thanks for asking, Russ. Any other questions from folks, please let me know.

There is a change in venue for part two of our Mini-Rendezvous July 10-14 as the marina we planned to stay with cannot fully serve our needs. This is a win for us as a plan B is now in place. We will be staying at Olverson’s Lodge Creek Marina on the South Branch of the Yeocomico River, 14nm from Horseshoe Bend on the Saint Marys River where we will meet and enjoy the Chesapeake Orchestra on Friday evening. Details below.

Olverson’s Lodge Creek marina is a pleasant and laid back (countrified) marina on the South Branch of the Yeocomico River, 14nm from Horseshoe Bend on the Saint Mary’s River. We have an air-conditioned clubhouse with full kitchen and covered outdoor dining area (with grills, serving tables, chafing dishes, etc.) reserved for us Saturday through Monday, a swimming pool, loaner bicycles, loaner vehicles, ice machine, and full bath house. The marina has slips available for all who have confirmed interest in attending the Mini-Rendezvous (and a few more). We will not be together on a private dock, but will be on Docks A and B. There is also a beautiful anchorage 100-200 yards north of (before arriving at) the marina, dinghy docks, and a fuel dock. Info at www.olversonsmarina.com tel. (804) 529-6868.

I have negotiated a $1.50 per foot per night rate for our group so folks who have already sent their checks to me will be due a refund. The rate includes electricity which will be somewhat limited. A few 50a receptacles are available and numerous 30a receptacles are available, so bring your splitters so that all boats can have some electricity. The marina has limited splitters available to loan.

Folks who have not yet sent payment to me should pay as indicated before but calculate the slip rental cost at $1.50 per foot per night. Contributions to the Chesapeake Orchestra are still requested - just indicate on a note what part of your payment is for slip rental and what part is for the Orchestra.

Regarding docking, I know the marina and will prepare a docking plan. There will be one side to dock available where a second boat can raft to that boat if anyone wants to do that. One or two other side to slips are available. The remaining slips are mostly stern in with small finger piers. If anyone has specific needs regarding docking, please advise and I will do my best with the plan.

Please call or email me directly with any questions. (703) 609-2033 and jacktburgess1@gmail.com
