Solutions for Leaking Diamond Sea-Glaze Doors on Selenes | ||||
By: J.R. Hsu, Jet-Tern Marine Edited By: Dave Pabst Dusie January 5, 2008 Editor's note: This was originally posted on January 5, 2008, to the previous Selene Owners e-mail forum. It has been reformatted and lightly edited as this News item to be placed here. This article has been reviewed and approved by JR Hsu prior to publishing. There are several Selenes that have reported problems with leaks in their Diamond Sea-Glaze (DSG) Dutch Doors. We believe that the source of the water is rain or sea water that entered through the key hole. When the water collects inside the door panel, it may penetrate through the welding seam and turn the inside veneer black. Jet-Tern Marine has made some improvements to the new doors to prevent them from leaking. We have drilled two "drain holes" in the bottom frame of each door so that if there is any water inside the door panel, it can escape. Please see the photos. Please check to see if there are drain holes at the bottom half of your Dutch Door. In case there are no drain holes there, we recommend drilling two holes as shown in the photos.
Jet-Tern Marine has also designed a stainless steel key cover to prevent rain or sea water from coming through the key hole. Please see the photos. Jet-Tern Marine would like to provide these stainless steel covers to those who don't have them on their Selene doors.
Once you stop the leaks, you can heat up the veneer to return it to the original color. If the veneer does not return to it's original color you can replace it with a stainless steel or aluminum sheet to cover the black veneer. Another solution is to make a template of that veneer panel and ship it with photos of the door to Jet-Tern Marine. We will have one of our skilled carpenters make a new veneer panel to replace the damaged one that will match as closely as possible the original grain & color of your door veneer. We recommend you ship the template and photos by DHL.
